MS108 Celtic umbo boss

Description

Celtic shields were reinforced in their middle by a hardwood piece called "Spina". To increase protection at the handle's level (where the spina was carved to let the hand grip the handle), an iron piece was added, the umbo in Latin, or shield boss. The shape of our replica is designed to match the spina's form. The two wings on the side were used to nail the boss to the wood. Early roman legionaries also used this kind of shield and bosses.

Iron. 26cm wide, 18cm high, 7cm deep.
