Description
Sober and elegant, this sabre belonged to a junior officer of the Light Infantry who departed from regulation by asking his cutler for a distinctive weapon, with a single-branch Hungarian-style guard, silvered as was proper for the Light Infantry. It is topped with a short-tailed backstrap and a lion’s-head pommel, in the style of the “Marengo” sabres. Above the crossguard, with oval langets, the grip is of checkered ebony, with an undecorated escutcheon in the middle, no doubt intended for the officer’s initials to be engraved later.
Curved fullered blade, in forged and tempered steel (high-carbon 1055), engraved, blued, and gilt on the first third with military trophies and foliage. Leather scabbard with silvered brass mounts. Overall length 90 cm, including a 77 cm blade. Blade width at the guard 3 cm. Weight 880 g.
